Austin Against War J20 Call

Thursday, January 20th

Thursday, January 20th
Counter-Inaugural Demonstration
5:00 - 7:00 pm

Pack the sidewalks of the Congress Avenue Bridge(east and west sidewalks) to Protest the Bush administration's unjust and immoral agenda!

In conjunction with events worldwide, you are cordially invited to participate in a special campaign in Austin -- by organizing educational events in the week(s) leading up to the inauguration on Thursday, January 20th, 2005. Don't let this opportunity to speak out for change pass you by.

For those not able to travel to the large protest in DC, we will join forces in Austin that day on the Congress Ave. bridge (east and west sidewalks) from 5:00 - 7:00 pm, bringing together our individual messages of outrage and visions of a better world. Following, an after-party/fundraiser for the Crawford Peace House will take place at Mother Egan's, 715 W. 6th.

PLEASE DO MORE THAN JUST SHOW UP -- ORGANIZE!!!
Join Austins Inaugurate This campaign by planning and adding YOUR own pre-event to a grassroots series of activities intended to expand awareness of the problems we face, identify changes that must be made, and to let our leaders know that we are not going to stand by in silence as they destroy our way of life and our world.

The redistribution of the countrys resources away from education, environmental protection, health care and other human needs is breaking down and destroying our social fabric, our relationship with other nations, and the democratic foundation upon which our survival as free people depends.

Our governments attempts to control the lives and resources of other nations and peoples around the globe has created the backlash against America that is the real source of any real threats to our security. A recent government study of conditions in Iraq concluded: They dont hate us because of our freedom; they hate us because of our policies.

WHAT'S YOUR POLICY TARGET?
Encourage organizations you already belong to conduct teach-ins, panel discussions, debates, speak-outs (invite press!), discussion roundtables or "salons" (informal gathering in one's home) or a town-hall or neighborhood meeting prior to Inauguration Day to identify specific programs or policies you would like to see "inaugurated" by this administration. OR simply gather your colleagues, friends, family, and neighbors to look at the impact the next four years will have on you, your prime issues and the country as a whole.*

PROMOTE YOUR EVENT in conjunction with like-events at: http://www.thirdcoastactivist.org/
Closer to January, a special header identifying events leading up to the Inauguration Day will be listed. Add yours by sending the announcement to pat@thirdcoastactivist.org [Include your group or organization name, contact person and contact info, date-time-place of the event, and a brief description of the event including any keynote speakers or special activities.]

--Please create your own e-annoucement language and fliers for your groups and spread it on!! --

WE ARE NOT ALONE -- similar events are planned in cities across the United States and around the world (generally in the Jan. 15-20 timeframe). Austin is the city that George Bush and his supporters chose as his stepping stone to the White House. We have, therefore, a special responsibility and a unique opportunity to make our voices heard.

TOGETHER WE CAN DO THIS--but it will take a little work on your part.

*For more information or ideas on organizing an event, contact: Debmocracy@yahoo.com

also ATTEND the MLK DAY PARADE! Please also mobilize your group to attend and bring your signs/banners to the MLK rally & march on Monday, Jan. 17 -- a good day NOT to work and to demonstrate the dream, is, in fact, still alive and it is NOT limited to feel-good pretenses of racial unity, but to the global attack on human rights in our war culture. http://www.mlkcelebration.com/marchandrally.php

PS: IF YOU'RE NOT ALREADY ACTIVE IN AN ORGANIZATION, we urge you join groups that are committed to change. To scout such groups, check out: www.thirdcoastactivist.org/groups.html or www.progressiveaustin.org/orgs.htm
